Thanks for the interesting read! I think your blog does a good job of reaching out to people whose political views may differ from your own, so keep up the good work!! I would just add that I think to many the price of alleviating the shame Dem politicians and activists put on them is too great - people probably won’t change their entire identity just so that someone they don’t even know has a higher opinion of them. I hope more Democrats realize the truth in what you’re saying.
Thanks so much Marie!! Yes good point! It seems like a lot of people feel like the bar is so high to cross so they may as well not try since they won’t possibly succeed.
I don’t think that’s necessarily true, but I get what makes people feel that way, especially when some Dems reinforce it.
Maybe the most frustrating part is that disaffected, would-be Dem voters are very open about how much they hate these attempts to shame them! America, for better or worse, is not a society in which this public shame culture is effective - we're too proud and individualistic for that.
Yes that’s definitely true about people being very open and frank about their issues with the Democratic Party. I think a lot of Democrats, including and especially people who engage in a lot of public shaming, feel like they’re being shamed by their critics (and sometimes they are but def not always). So, some Dems don’t take it as constructive feedback.
It’s all a terrible shame spiral and cycle!! (imo)
That’s an interesting point up American’s being prideful and that that may make us less open to critique. And the individualism too ofc. I’ll be thinking on that.
For sure, many right-wing people, especially those who support MAGA, do a lot of shaming and\ mocking of people on the left or non-MAGA conservatives, so I get it. It is absolutely is a terrible shame spiral smh! I wish Americans were more open to critique, including poorly-articulated or less-than-charitable critiques, but as the cycle shows, we're not.
